2018 -2019 Season Rugby Review

Here’s our Chairman of Rugby Mike Ruthen’s summary of last season:

I would like to start by thanking everybody involved on the playing side for last season as our Club enjoyed its most successful season ever on many fronts. The 1st Team (Pythons) finished in a promotion battle in Yorkshire 3, sadly narrowly missing out but ending in 3rd place in the League with 91 points. The 2nd Team (Pirates) also finished in 3rd place in their League; the YRFU Northern League, after being promoted last year.

All in all, a very successful year on the pitch driven by our excellent Coaching Team of Dan Bird (Head Coach), Dale Breakwell & Alan Cawkwell-Brown, ably supported by our Player Welfare Physios Robbie Jamieson & Mark “Fozzy” Foster. Thanks also to our captains Dan Shortman and Ollie Davies for their commitment to their teams throughout the season too.

A critical part of our success is the strength in depth we have at the club, with 47 players pulling on the Pythons Jersey during the season and 78 players running out for the Pirates and our aspirations are high for the 2019/20 Season with Promotion to Yorkshire 2 the key priority for the Club.

This year-on-year increase in player numbers admirably demonstrates our standing in the region’s rugby community and will allow us to field a 3rd/Vets Team on selected Saturdays and continues to strength our player pool.

Thank you again for all your efforts last season, let’s continue to grow as a Club & I look forward to celebrating with you all at the end of the coming season.
Mike Ruthen Chairman of Rugby.
